Second Question: Jesus said, to the rich young ruler’s question, “what must I do to inherit eternal Life?”
And for those that responded to previous question, yes, I do know what a parable is. SO, now, Jesus says, that in order to inherit eternal life, one must keep the Commands.Lk 18:20 YES or NO? Is this also a parable or literal?

  • tjsmar93:

well you must try to keep commandments but the parable ending says

"Sell all your possesions and give the money to the poor"

Jesus answers the question during the old covenant, so the answer is literal at that moment. Remember, He’s not made the new covenant with His disciples at that time followed by the shedding of blood to seal the covenant.

Also, Jesus goes beyond people who are just trying to keep rules. He looks at their hearts. The rich man ‘supposedly’ kept the commandments, but his heart wasn’t into it…

This was literal. The idea is that there should be nothing more important in our lives than God. That is why the rich young ruler went away sorrowful. He could not bear to part with his material things. That does not mean that we can not have possesions but these possesions cannot get in the way of seeking and serving God.

Be careful about taking things out of context. Of course this is literal, but what are you thinking about? What interpretation are you thinking of when you ask that question?

Yes, the commandments need to be obeyed. We need to love God and Love neighbor, and there is God stressing the love of neighbor, very often forgotten. O.K. But the commandments are part of the old testament, we are cold to go beyond (not to cancel out) the old in the new. We are called to a most extraordinary love, to love as Jesus loves. We do that in the way that Jesus invites each one of us personally to do it. Some he called to be his disciples, some asked to be one of those who followed him, traveled with him, and he said to them ‘no’ and others who had not even thought of it, were asked! (a tax collector?) And so each person has to answer their call, free from earthly attachments that get in the way of loving God and neighbor in the way that we are each asked to do so. This man, was asked to sell he goods and follow Christ, but he left with a heavy heart.

    Peace!

No Jesus knew this mans problem was the commandments so He confronted him with them and showed him he can’t obey them good enough. When He told him to sell all Jesus exposed the mans failure to keep the first commandment. His wealth was his god which is why the text points our he was very rich. Then Jesus explained things to those who heard and were sorrowful and asked "who can be saved?’. He said with men this is impossible (to keep th Law and be saved) but with God it is possible.
The scripture points out clearly we can not earn our salvation or become just before God by our obedience. The central message of the Gospel is Christ crucified and if men could save themselves by obedience Christ would have died in vain.
We respond to Gods grace with obedience out of thankfulness not to earn anything.

    Galatians 2:16
knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law but by faith in Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Christ Jesus, that we might be justified by faith in Christ and not by the works of the law; for by the works of the law no flesh shall be justified.
    Ephesians 2:8-9
For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast.
