The main idea, is to not hate, but love everyone around us. The only thing we are supposed to hate is the sins people do, not the people who do it. So u are wrong to suggest that all christians are that way. Some churches may be misleading, but if a person has really understood christianity and its truness in all its places, the person will find that they are unable to really hate a person. The only reason it got so popular in Rome was because it gave people a chance to rabble-rouse by refusing to sacrifice to the state gods (offerings could be expensive–it was like voicing your dissatisfaction with government by protesting an annoying tax).
